Our people have lots of expertise and wide experience in geochemistry, hydrogeology, soil science, water science, environmental-civil-mining engineering, and the ecology of plants, animals and inland waterways. We also have skills in mapping and Geographic Information Systems.

Alan Puhalovich
Principal Manager EWL Sciences
has more than 16 years’ hydrogeological experience throughout Australia and Indonesia. He has particular expertise in assessing the impacts of mining on hydrological systems, based on the results of groundwater investigations, monitoring data and numerical (computer) modelling techniques. He is a member of the International Association of Hydrogeologists and a Chartered member of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
Michelle Iles
(Principal Environmental Chemist, Manager Earth & Water Sciences)
Michelle has 10 years experience in environmental assessment and monitoring of impacts of mining from a regulatory and industry perspective. Michelle’s major focus has been on protection and assessment of aquatic ecosystems and assessment of technical applications from industry. Michelle has consulted to the International Atomic Energy Agency and implemented national water quality guidelines.
Paul Davey - Ass Dip Appl Sc, BSc, M Trop Env Management.
(Environmental Scientist)
Paul is an environmental scientist with qualifications in tropical environmental management and experience in government, university and industry on environmental impacts assessments, environmental audits and natural resource management projects. He has represented the Commonwealth Government in the Indian Ocean Territories on environmental regulation, and has worked with construction, waste water treatment, mining and community issues.
David Dettrick
(Principal Environmental Scientist)
David Dettrick BEng (Civil/Environmental) MSc (EnvSci) has over 17 years experience in environmental management in wastewater management, contaminated site assessment, ecotoxicology, environmental values, river health assessments, groundwater and environmental flow assessments, air and noise pollution, and health risk assessments. He has worked for both Tasmania and Northern Territory EPA, local government and the mining sector, and has contributed to both national and state level environmental policy and research in water, water recycling and soil, biosolids, and rapid biological assessment.
Dr Louise Frick - BSc(Hons), PhD.
(Senior Geochemist)
Louise has a research background in isotope geochemistry and experience in research and laboratory management in universities and the mining industry. She is currently working on complex site water balance modelling and water management strategies at mine sites.
Ché Gibson (Environmental Scientist)
Ché has laboratory experience in toxicology and extensive field experience in environmental surveys, and mine and industrial site environmental management. Ché is currently on maternity leave.
Nicole Jacobsen – BAquaticSc.
(Senior Environmental Chemist)
Nicole has expertise in the monitoring and assessment of surface water, groundwater and wastewater chemistry and hydrology. Nicole also has experience in the management of industrial sites, and 4 years experience consulting with indigenous peoples and community relations.
Janet Lewis
(Technical Officer)
Janet has a Diploma in Applied Science and has worked in Metallurgical and analytical laboratory for Iluka Resources.
Peter Poole
(Principal Engineer)
Peter has qualifications in Civil Engineering and more than 30 years experience in civil engineering and mining . He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and was Manager of Henry Walker Eltin’s Land Development, Civil and Mining operations.
Linda Pugh
(Environmental Scientist)
Linda has experience in community consultations, planning for site closure, preparation of documents for regulatory processes, eg annual bond calculations, Environmental Impact Statements and statutory reporting.
Kyla Valdron Clark
(Senior Water Scientist)
Kyla has degrees in biology and chemical engineering and over 10 years experience in the mining industry. Kyla’s current focus on wetlands for water treatment combine these areas of expertise for practical application.
James Van Der Helm
(Environmental Scientist)
James has seven years environmental management related experience working in various capacities in the Northern Territory including remote areas of Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land. As a Mining Officer James has worked closely with Traditional Owners, Government agencies and private industry and has experience implementing Environmental Management Systems, conducting fauna and flora surveys as well as managing and controlling noxious weeds. Most recently James has been involved with the environmental monitoring and reporting requirements for an Iron Ore mine in the Northern Territory.
Dr Ping Lu
(Principal Plant Ecologist, Manager Ecology)
Ping has more than 20 years’ experience in plant ecophysiology. He has particular expertise in water use by plants, soil-plant-atmosphere interactions, ecohydrology and revegetation. Until recently, he was a Senior Scientist at CSIRO working with the horticultural industry (particularly mangoes). His earlier research in France and China was on forest ecology and forestry.
Chloe Bradley
(Technical Assistant)
Chloe is one of our newer recruits and is based at Ranger Mine where she provides support for staff and contractors undertaking a wide variety of EWL Sciences projects. Her particular skills are in liaison with mine staff and management systems, sample collection and storage, and data compilation.
Dr Matthew Daws
(Senior Plant Ecologist)
Matt has more than 10 years experience in plant ecology. He has particular expertise in the seed and seedling biology of species from the tropics. Until recently he was a research scientist at Kew Gardens (London) where he focused on the germination and storage of tropical tree seeds. He has tutored multivariate statistics and vegetation survey techniques at tertiary level and has fieldwork experience in Central America where he undertook research for his PhD on tree species coexistence in tropical forests.
Dr Ron Firth
(Senior Animal Ecologist)
Ron has wide-ranging experience carrying out field surveys in many areas of Australia including Victoria, New South Wales and in the Kimberley (Western Australia). In the Northern Territory he has seven years of extensive experience carrying out flora and fauna surveys on Melville and Bathurst Islands, Cobourg Peninsula, Kakadu National Park, Croker Island, Alice Springs area, Port Keats area, Dorisvale area and Charles Darwin National Park. He has also tutored two flora and fauna survey techniques at a tertiary level. Ron has a PhD on the ecology of the vulnerable brush tailed rabbit rat.
Cherie Gellert
(Environmental Scientist)
Cherie is a recent graduate in Biological Science with interests in conservation biology and the sustainable use of natural resources.
Phil Hickey
(Spatial Scientist)
Phil is experienced in GIS and digital image processing for natural resource management. Phil has worked and lectured at the Charles Darwin University on these subjects and on data management.
Amber Hooke
(Environmental Scientist)
Amber has 6 years experience doing fauna surveys and has considerable experience in vertebrate pest animal management issues, in particular foxes and cane toads. Amber has recent experience in assessing the impact of cane toads on northern Quoll populations in Kakadu National Park.
Graeme Passmore
(Technical Officer)
Graeme has over ten years experience as a technical officer in horticulture working with CSIRO. Particular experience in conducting field trials aimed at the improvement of quality and yield of mangoes.
Philippe Puig
( Senior Spatial Scientist)
Philippe has a broad experience in the use of GIS and remote sensing for ecological applications. He has marine experience with Northern Territory Fisheries on a variety issues including GIS analysis of prawn farming suitability, trepang catch records, Timor Reef catch data and pearl oyster farming. Philippe’s terrestrial applications of GIS include vegetation mapping, land use, site suitability analysis, fire mapping, distribution of rare and threatened species and cultural heritage mapping.
Anja Zimmerman
(Senior Plant Ecologist)
Anja has 10 years experience in terrestrial & coastal plant ecology, mine revegetation and the development & implementation of land management & monitoring strategies. She also has expertise in the preparation & assessment of development proposals under the Commonwealth Environment Protection & Biodiversity Control Act 1999.
Caryn Inall

Office Administration)
Caryn has over 15 years experience of working and coordinating office/personnel activities. Recently, Caryn has assisted with the EWL Sciences move to quality managed systems. Caryn offers support for EWL Sciences projects in a clerical and administrative role.
Helen McIntosh
(Accounting)
Helen has been with EWL Sciences for a number of years as our Acting Accountant and is responsible for the following areas: personnel records management, capital management, budgeting, project management, month end processing, assistance in preparation of management accounts, and reviews of EWLS financial performance. She is currently completing her Bachelor of Business specialising in Accounting.
EWL Sciences also has extensive networks in research, government and private industry organisations and we can organise and mobilise teams of specialists to tackle particular environmental problems when circumstances require extra effort.
